Cartridge Filling Guide

In this guide we will teach you how to refill a cartridge. While you can do this to disposables, it is recommended you use a fresh cartridge on a battery that can go as low as 1.8v (in our recommended below).

What you will need

Necessary

  • Distillate - We highly recommend the HTE (High Terp Extract) Sativa or Indiva sold by Dr Ganja, which can be found here.
  • Cartridges (see below for good quality & cost)
  • A battery, we recommend the Yocan UNI Pro 2
  • Oil Syringes, you can get these here.
  • A dry heater with a thermostat. Oil heaters exist, but we throw everything into a dehydrator. The model we use can be found here.

Useful tools

  • Savvy Syringe Pressure Holder, made by us, this goes around the top of the syringe so you don't have to hold it while you wait for it to fill with oil. This helps to fill simultaneously for cheap.
  • Savvy Heating Holder, made by us, this holds everything as it heats. This plastic is heat-strong.
  • Silicone mat, size doesnt matter as you will cut it into squares. Get a cheap one. We like this one.

Picking a Cartridge

We recommend PCKT brand, but of them there are many types. We typically tell people to stick to Ceramic coils if possible, and Stainless Steel or Ceramic pods.

The Process

Filling the Syringe

First thing's first, put the syringe blunted needle tip onto the syringe and put the cap aside for when it is full. Get the Syringe with needle, distillate with its cap off, and put them into dehydrator on the Heating Holder which should rest on-top of a silicone sheet.

Turn the dehydrator to 130F. While it can go to 150F and some guides even say this, there is potential damage at this heat to the quality of the distillate.

Let everything heat up. This should take 5 minutes.

Then, put the distillate on a slight angle. This can be done with the cap, a few coins, anything.

Stick the needle into the distillate and slightly pull back on the plunger on the syringe. Look for oil to flow into the needle.

At the point, put this Syringe Clip on and wait 3-5 minutes for the syringe to fill. At this point, you can do multiple syringes. There are little nubs for the syringes to rest on as they fill, if using the Savvy Heating Holder

Once full, it is easiest to fill your cartridges while hot.

Filling the Cartridges

Take off the cartridge top. Most are screw-on, and some are pull-off. If you are uncertain, it is recommended to attempt unscrewing first so as to avoid damage.

Once the cartridge is open, place the syringe into it and fill until satisfied. Make sure you are filling bottom-up, as even warm oil is viscous.

Ideally place the cap on within 2 minutes and while the oil is still warm. Do not get any oil into the center tube.

Let sit for 10 minutes - Let the oil flow everywhere.

On lowest temp, ideally 1.8v, gently pull so as to fill the wicks and test the flow.

Cleaning

Optionally, grain alcohol comes in handy here. Graves Grain Alcohol is cheap, affordable, ad not toxic like Isopropyl.

If you are using the recommended dehydrator, then you can simply place the needles into the top slot and put it on maximum. Let the needles rest over a silicone pad. In 5-10 minutes they will be clear enough for storage.

The grain alcohol must first soak a piece of paper towel, only then can the towel work to absorb oils. This can really help if your distillate jar has oil around the top.

Future Refills

Now that you have filled syringes, you can refill easily - or even dab!

If you'd like to make refilling even easier, use the dehydrator at the 91F-108F setting for 2-3 minutes and it will flow readily.

After a few refills, due to a flooded base, recurrent clogging, or a burnt wick - it might be time to change to a new cartridge.
